From the cover of TSJ 33.3

Steadman’s untitled illustration was initially published in his and Hunter S. Thompson’s 1983 book The Curse of Lono—an account of their stay in Hawaii while covering the 1980 Honolulu Marathon for Running magazine.

“I’ve entered you into the Pipeline Masters,” Thompson writes to Steadman in the book, “a world-class surfing contest on the north shore of Oahu. You will need some work on your high-speed balance for this one, Ralph. You’ll be shot through the curl at speeds up to 50 or even 75 miles an hour, and you won’t want to fall.”

Steadman, a non-surfer, declined the farcical invite, but his interpretation of the Pipeline experience resonates. Over 40 years later, it landed on the cover of TSJ 33.3 and is offered here, uncropped and in partnership with the artist himself, as a limited edition print available to order now until July 31.
