28.5

On the cover: What happens along a patch of reef when you mix decades-spanning family ties and countless hours in the water? Effortless positioning on any wave you want. Mason Ho, Rocky Point. The interior of 28.5 explores the North Shore’s culture of youthful goading in heavy surf, dodges gun-toting property owners in search for slabs in New England, and relays the foreign scams and scandals of Nat Young and Miki Dora. Profiles of twin-fin artist Torren Martyn, tattooer Ben Grillo, and cross-stepper Josie Prendergast add personal touches.

RECORDS OF THE ISTHMUS

The guys who surf in Panama have a different philosophy than surfers elsewhere. They have an easy-going, almost-lazy attitude. Things move slower in the tropics and all the regulars, since they are not motivated by competition, the economics of surfing professionally, or status, surf basically for themselves.

SINGLE NEEDLE

Surfing and beach culture often make their way into Grillo’s tattoos, sometimes directly, like a literal depiction of a surfing bird, or subtly, like a skull with an eye socket composed out of a breaking wave. So too do classic Chicano-style motifs, whether it’s chola girls, classic cars, or fanned-out peacocks. It all comes back to a focus on his lineage.

YOU WON'T GO

In Ethiopia, Hamar boys leap over rows of bulls, while in Kenya, young Maasai men once hunted lions, alone. And on the North Shore of Oahu? Adolescents face the sand-sucking monster called Ke Iki shorepound and stroke into unmakeable ledges that collapse like God’s angry fist mere feet from the golden grains on shore.

DOWN BY THE SPIN GHAR MOUNTAINS

Some people have surmised that Miki must have smuggled drugs to support his lifestyle. He told me he would never be so crude: dope was big and bulky and not worth the effort compared with gemstones.
