Deep Diving Sonny Miller’s Photo Archive

Five extra frames by “Captain Fun.”

Light / Dark

Our current issue’s “Captain Fun” showcases the still photography of the late filmmaker Sonny Miller.

“He was always a traveler,” Jamie Brisick writes in the intro, “but making The Search films cemented his wanderlust. Venturing to far-flung locales with Tom Curren, Frankie Oberholzer, and friends suited his temperament. He loved the unknown, loved to wing it, was at his best with a map spread across the steering wheel of a four-wheel-drive vehicle on some washboard dirt road a hundred miles from the nearest town.”

In addition to documenting peak surf action, Miller had a keen eye for the behind-the-scenes moments, too. Enjoy these five extra frames pulled from the filmmakers’ photo archives, and pick up TSJ 35.3 to read and view the full portfolio.
