A visit to Mikey Whaley’s eclectic San Diego store.

“Pack Ratt Records and Junk is a reflection of my entire life,” Mikey Whaley tells author Ben Waldron in TSJ 34.6 about his shop. “It’s inspired by every weird store I stepped into growing up, all the music I listen to, all the shit that my friends and I are into. It’s a hangout. A place to meet weird people, see weird shit, and let people be themselves and not get vibed out by some cool-guy surfer. It’s a place for my talented friends to sell the bitchin’ shit they make. It’s an open door for every type of human. If you’re cool, come hang out and be silly. That’s what it’s about.”
In this short film companion to the print feature, “Genus Neotoma,” that’s exactly what filmmaker Kevin Voegtlin did. Stop by if you’re in the neighborhood, and tell Mikey that The Journal sent you.
