For years, filmmaker Ben Weiland has scouted remote, cold-water surf spots via Google Earth and traveled to setups showing potential. In 2022, Weiland released Island X, a film documenting his journey with Josh Mulcoy, Pete Devries, and Noah Wegrich to a remote island in the Bering Sea. Photographer Mark McInnis wrote a story about their adventure in TSJ 31.4 (Read “Solving for X”). Two years later, Weiland and the crew returned to Island X and explored untapped surf on a neighboring island, culminating in a new film, Return to the Bering. It’s a surf trip filled with challenging weather, sketchy flights, fringe communities, wildlife encounters, and waves.
This new full-length feature film is screening exclusively for TSJ members from November 1-7.
