In TSJ 34.4, Dylan Graves riffs about isolated surf cultures, weird wave criteria, and his motivation to keep searching.
“With perfect waves, people can be secretive,” Graves says, “which I totally understand. But with novelty waves, it’s almost like they want to share them and have other people check them out. It just became an easy way to connect with people in these places I was going to, which then opened up the full experience of wherever that was. I got kind of obsessed with seeking that out, as opposed to just trying to get barreled every single day of my life.” (As you’ll see in the highlight reel above, his novelty quest still yields plenty of tube time.)
