The elemental surf experience—the riding of a wave— is a hemp hawser. It has heft. It is simple to take in at a glance. It has a single purpose. But out there on its working end, it explodes into a thousand yarns. The best a single issue of TSJ can hope to accomplish is to identify a dozen-or-so of these, and braid them together into some sort of resolution. Over the course of a year, our six issues can be twisted into a representation of what the surfing life has meant over the last twelve months. It’s no yearbook, as we include historical context and much editorial subjectivity, but if we’re doing our job, the results are timely. That’s what we strive for. This issue is feeling good. We hope you enjoy it.
