Artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel began surfing when his parents moved from Brooklyn, NY, to Brownsville, TX, at age 15. Here Schnabel expands on his friendship with Herbie Fletcher, which began in 1967. Over the years they have surfed “everywhere” together, fed each other’s creative, and just like hanging around one another. Surfing to him means freedom, and he feels fortunate to be able to live life from his art.
