Pipe was good all morning until the wind came up around noon. Then everyone left the beach to eat and rest. Tom Curren, who was out at Backdoor, was one of the few that stayed—riding a logo-less board. That made this shot a big hit with purists. The photo reeked of cover use, but Surfer magazine didn't want to risk straining relations with (Tom’s sponsor) Rip Curl. This cutback was his exclamation point at the end of a long tube ride. —T.S.

Tom Servais first surfed in Florida as a schoolboy. In the early 1970s, he moved to Southern California and began shooting and surfing near where the top surf magazines were located. His first published image was an action shot taken at Trestles. A year later, he joined Surfer doing dark room printing and local photography. Demonstrating skill, he began receiving travel assignments and North Shore stints. Through the following years Tom became known for cutting-edge action and for files full of editorially invaluable grab portraits that captured more of the subject than posed studio images. He also worked with Art Brewer learning studio skills, which he balanced with long periods of photography travel from paradise to paradise. Tom has remained so physically and attitudinally young that he continues to be a requested photographer on edit/ad photo trips with sponsored riders where delivering high-impact results is crucial. Tom is one of five Masters whose work has been the featured as one of The Surfer’s Journal’s large-format coffee-table book series.
