The sun peeks over Pupukea Heights and lights up the ocean at 7:45 every morning. Roaming the area allows me to figure out swell direction and where it will be good. I always carried a small 50mm lens on these surf checks just in case something worthwhile presented itself. Peering through the palms as I approach the beach on a day like this one, I immediately know it’s perfect and turn to rush back home to gather my equipment, lunch, hat, and water for a long day on the hot sand. The weather, swell, and lighting frequently change dramatically in mere minutes creating a cat-and-mouse game between the photographers to see who gets it and who doesn’t.  —J.D.

Jeff Divine grew up in La Jolla, California, in the 1950s and ’60s taking photos of his friends surfing. He tried casually submitting several to Surfer magazine in 1969. In 1970, Surfer responded by hiring Jeff to shoot that winter’s action on the North Shore of Oahu. For the next 35 years, Divine would serve as one of the magazine’s mainstay photojournalists, traveling the world and returning each winter to Oahu. During the later part of that stretch he served as Photo Editor of Surfer, and upon retiring that position joined The Journal in the same capacity. Jeff’s file is unique in that it covers a cohesive, non-stop 35-year historical continuity unmatched by any other surf photographer. To date, three hardcover books of his photography have been published, and M+B Gallery, Beverly Hills, CA, has produced and represents a successful limited edition fine art collection of Jeff’s images.
