RIP: Steve Adler
By Jake Howard

AdlerIn a forgotten corner of Westminster, not too far from the mall, a clutch of surfboard builders toils away. Day in and down out, they mow, sculpt, sand and polish. Most of the time things are relatively uneventful. Yesterday was not. Sadly, yesterday they lost one of their own.

In the early afternoon hours Steve Adler was putting the finishing touches on a board -- sanding the leash plug -- when he collapsed. Reportedly, with partner and fellow-shaper Tim Stamps working up towards the front of their rented space, Adler called out for help, but by the time Stamps got back to him he’d gone down. Help was mustered from the mechanic next door, and Chas Wickwire, who’s shaping outfit is based just a couple doors down, also came over to assist. 911 was called and Wickwire went out to flag down the paramedics and usher them to the scene. Unfortunately attempts to revive Adler were unsuccessful.

As with most any tragedy in the Surfside/Seal Beach area, a group of well-wishers and broken-hearted surfers gathered to toast their fallen friend over a schooner on Main Street. At the time of his passing Adler was ranked second in the Southern California standup paddle rankings' stock class. He leaves behind a 13-year-old son.

Memorial service details to be determined.
