Lombard Look
By Steve Pezman

Pez SaysBob Lombard, San Clemente. Lombard moved from Whittier, CA to the beach in his late teens and fished lobster commercially with Al French and Reynolds Yater out of Newport Beach. He got hooked on surfing when he began diving abalone for Lorrin Harrison out of Dana Cove. At a time in southern Orange County when watermen prided themselves on being self-sufficient, Lombard built his own skiffs and was known for his work ethic. Lombard continued commercial sword fishing well into his 70s. While he fished commercial, Lombard was also working for the Orange County Harbor Department in which capacity he took part in some epic marine rescues. Bob also loved to ski and in the late 1950s was one of the earliest surfers to go to Sun Valley, Idaho with Manhattan Beach surfer and ski film pioneer Warren Miller. An issue of Life Magazine featured his surfing and skiing lifestyle along with buddies “Burrhead” Drever, “Hammerhead” Gravage, and “Opai” Wert. Lombard was one of the original members of the San Onofre Surfing Club, which was formed in 1954. In the later 1950s with S.O.S.C. founding President Barney Wilkes and members Paul Luton and David “Keyhole” Tomkins, they were some of the earliest surfers to explore the Baja Peninsula.
