We started out boarding after a four-foot dump. I was on a 156 fish with new bindings, and we were at the top of Howard Glacier. We'd been told to stay within 20 feet of the guide's tracks because of all the hidden crevasses.
I went down first and had to keep my speed up because of a large ice field that we had to go over. At about 40 mph I felt a wobble in my front boot. All of a sudden I was thrown forward and started tumbling. After about six cartwheels I finally came to rest in the middle of a field of crevasses. I'd just experienced a double release, which doesn't happen often with snowboard bindings.
My board was racing down the glacier, and there was Gerry Lopez, not far behind in hot pursuit. He tackled the board just as it was about to go into this large, bottomless hole.
Back where I was sitting, something was wrong with my butt. I had been hit by the board, and when I tried to get up I couldn't. So I crawled on my hands and knees about 200 yards to get away from a large crevasse. In the end a helicopter came to pick me up. I went back to the lodge, took a handful of ibuprofen and tried to stretch.
It's a new day today, and I'm going out in ten minutes with a sore ass and a pocketful of pills. We found out that the screws I'd used on the bindings were not long enough, and that's why they come off. I'm checking them good this time. Other than that, the sun is out and it’s a beautiful day.
