Summercloud Dreaming
Australia holds a special place in the hearts of many surfers. It is a country with a surfing culture all its own and a strong ethos of committed exploration, but with so many quality waves it's easy to imagine an Aussie just staying home. The wave at Black Rock, a.k.a. Summercloud, a.k.a. Aussie Pipe, a.k.a. Wreck Bay, is a prime example of a spot worthy of devotion. As Hugh McLeod notes, "Some places are too rich to answer to a single name."
Navigating by Heart
Les jumeaux (the twins) Emmanuel and Maximilien Berque from Southwest France, have led an extraordinary surfing life. Not only with the many waves they've ridden throughout their part of the world, but also through the truly epic journeys they've undertaken in their self-designed craft. What could be more hard-core, more truly surf-inspired than an ocean crossing on an 18-foot boat you've built yourself? These trips (there have been four on as many designs) brought the brothers Berque to the very source of the waves they've so loved to ride.
Undercurrents
Co-editor Christian Beamish analyzes the historical influence of the Skil Saw on shaping and quotes various established shapers regarding their personal connection with this imperative tool.
