Soul in the Hole
Nat Young enlightens us on the "Oxbow Soul and Style" at Puerto Escondido. A far cry from the format of today's shortboard "cloning" contests, the "Oxbow Soul and Style" is a blast from the past when everyone rode different equipment and had different style based on their board and location they rode them. The contest featured the likes of Joel Tudor, Beau Young, and Bonga Perkins, among others.
The Galapagos
A hop, skip and a jump from Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands, Jamie Tierney tells of a new surfing destination.
Kosta
La Cote Basque Au Fil Des Vagues. Over 10 pages of photos by Eric Chauche of the consistent and magical Basque coast, from giant surf at Belharra to the legendary Mundaka.
Sure Form
Expat Tom Wegener planes a life at Noosa Heads. A profile by Phil Jarratt on "The Joker." A native of Southern California, now living in Noosa, Australia, Wegener has made a life building mostly wooden surfboards, from balsa to paulownia, with an everlonging desire to surf like an ancient Hawaiian king.
Rare Birds: Ghost Tree
Ryan Masters take us inside the mind of those who pioneered the infamous phenomenon known as "Ghost Trees." Breaking right of the 18th hole of the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Course, Ghost Trees has scared the living crap out of even the wildest hellmen. Featuring photos and insight by Don Curry, Peter Mel, Ken "Skindog" Collins, and Tyler Smith, among others.
The King of Beasts
The definitive article on Charles "Buzzy" Trent by Ricky Grigg. From Malibu to Makaha, Buzzy is "a man who has conquered fear, followed his heart, and attempted a life as lord and master of his own ship." Includes in depth Interviews with Buzzy by Rick Grigg, a discussion on Buzzy between Kit Horn and Steve Pezman, and numerous photos from the vault.
Drafting Pettibon
Dan Duane attempts to get into the head of the elusive artist, Raymond Pettibon. Pettibon, the brother of Greg Ginn from the punk rock group, Black Flag, drew many of their album covers in the 1980's. Pettibon has done numerous drawings of surfing, a handful of which are included in the article.
The Spirits of Katiet
With another pro surfer boat trip to the Mentawai Islands underway, Tim Baker makes a call to invite Lance Knight, the man who first discovered Lance's right 14 years earlier. The article includes a historic account of Lance's first trip, as well as journal entries from his return.
Timekeeper: Anthony Friedkin
Jamie Brisick takes a look at photographer Anthony Friedkin's work over the years. Friedkin is a surf photographer by trade, however you won't find him pointing his camera at the pipeline masters or the "cash register barrels of Teahupoo". Rather his work is more inspired by the black and white golden era masters, like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Andre Kertesz.
