Going Deeper: Kneel and Deliver

Come deadline crunch occasionally we are, regrettably, prone to an oversight or two. On the cover of 21.1, our new issue, you'll find a kneeboarder in perfect trim on an equally perfect emerald green left-hander. We knew the instant we saw it that it was a cover-worthy image, and are glad we were able to make it work as such. Unfortunately what you won't find is a photo credit, and for that we humbly apologize to Steen Barnes, the creator of said image. In an effort to make good here's a video clip we dug up of old Steeny doing his thing on a kneeboard back in '95. Note the fin-drift tail blow on the opening wave, a good 10 years before they were really popularized by the stand-up set.

And about the cover image, Steen explains, "It's my local break, we call it 'Cans,' named after an old shit pipe that used to dump shit on the beachs here in the '70s. The pipe and the shit are gone, but the waves remain. This joint is a swell sucker, and on some days is a genuine below-sea-level wave. It's a sand bottom pipeline to be blunt. I live across the road. I have had the best barrels of my life here."
